Desserts are tough to resist all year long, but it’s even tougher to avoid temptation during the holidays. While you don’t need deny yourself all the time, you do need to make healthy choices that will help you reach your weight loss goals. Here are a few weight loss tips you can use as you navigate all the tasty desserts this holiday season.

Go with Small Portions

When you’re following a reasonable, healthy diet, you can have desserts. However, you need to go with small portions to avoid sabotaging your weight loss efforts. Instead of downing the entire pie, go with a single, small piece. Use a little plate and a small fork when you indulge to keep portion sizes small. You’ll still get to enjoy your favorites without overdoing it.

Reduce Sugar and Add Spices

Many holiday desserts are packed with sugar. Reduce sugar and calories by cutting a fourth of the sugar out of your recipes. When you reduce the sugar, add spices to add more flavor to desserts, such as cloves or cinnamon. These spices not only make desserts taste wonderful, they can help you shed fat while offering many other great health benefits.

Cut the Fat

Fat isn’t bad for you, but unhealthy fats can be bad for your heart and your weight loss goals. You can cut back on the fat in your holiday desserts by choosing oils higher in unsaturated fats or by replacing some of the fat in a recipe with applesauce, pureed beans, or canned pumpkin 

Stay in Control

It’s easy to get carried away with all the holiday goodies, but making a few little rules for yourself can help you stay in control. Choose a day to skip the cookies or a day when you don’t eat pie. Little rules can help you avoid blowing all your calories on the wrong choices.

Don’t forget, it’s fine to reward yourself with a holiday treat. Keep portion sizes small and look for ways to make desserts healthier. You really can have your cake and eat it too if you’re careful.
