Stressing out about losing weight? Lighten up - literally. New research suggests that a good laugh can help you burn calories and ultimately shed pounds.

In conducting the study, researchers observed 45 pairs of adult friends who viewed multiple film clips - some funny, some serious. Clips were shown in a room equipped with devices that measured the number of calories burned andmonitored the rate, duration and type of laughter, and participants wore

wearing monitors that measured their heart rates.

Laugh to Lose Weight

The results: Laughter increased participants' heart rate and calorie burn by up to 20 percent. The longer participants laughed, the more pronounced the effects. Researchers calculated that laughing for 15minutes can burn up to 50 calories, depending upon a person's weight and the intensity of laughter.

That 50-calorie burn amounts to about four pounds a year. While that doesn't seem like much, consider that laughter makes virtually any activity more fun - including tough workouts.
