America's Top 10 Fittest Cities
Once a year, the American College of Sports Medicine releases its America Fitness Index (AFI), a study that ranks the 50 most populous metropolitan areas in the United States according to the overall health and fitness of their residents. The annual report looks at a variety of factors including preventive health behaviors, levels of chronic disease conditions, health care access, and community resources and policies that support physical activity.
"The AFI is two things: a measure of how healthy a metro area is today, and a call-to-action for urban and suburban leaders to design infrastructures that promote active lifestyles and lead to positive health outcomes," said Walter Thompson, chair of the AFI Advisory Board in a media release.
For the second consecutive year, the Washington, DC metropolitan area came out on top. There, a full 73 percent of survey respondents reported regular exercise or physical activity over the prior 30 days, 35.6 percent said they eat two or more fruits each day, 19.6 percent eat three or more vegetables per day and 86.9 percent are non-smokers.
