Your body needs enough food if you want to be healthy, energetic and free from health problems. Going on a starvation diet is counterproductive if you want to lose weight because your body will hoard fat rather than burn it. At the same time, this does not mean you need to stick to the traditional breakfast, lunch and dinner meal plan with a few small snacks thrown in. Many people opt to eat six small meals a day rather than three large ones and they are just as healthy and energetic as those who stick to the traditional three-meal plan.

Moreover, there is also clear evidence that eating whenever you feel like it does have some advantages. If you leave too large a gap between meals, you will experience a drop in blood sugar. This drop leads to lack of energy, which in turn causes you to crave an unhealthy snack such as chips, a chocolate bar or a bottle of soda. Alternatively, those who plan to eat six small meals a day are ready for this drop in energy and have something healthy to counter the reaction.

The key is to choose small yet healthy meals that pack a punch, giving you a needed energy boost without packing on the pounds. There are plenty of healthy small meal options that can be prepared in little or no time.  Just remember to shop for the right ingredients in advance. Good options include lean meat, low fat cheese spread, homemade granola, whole wheat bread, tortillas, vegetable sticks with a low-fat dip, fruit and low fat yogurt. It may take some time to switch over to six small meals instead of three large ones but anyone who is attempting to lose weight may want to give it a try.
