If you really want to lose weight, there are simple tips that you can use to trick your mind into eating less. While most diets focus on reducing the number of calories and increasing the amount of time you spend exercising, playing tricks on your mind can help you achieve your goal without using much effort at all.

Eat slower and stay focused on your meal. Set a timer for 30 minutes and make sure you take that amount of time to eat regular serving sized portions of food. You will learn to chew your food more efficiently and relax between bites. The longer you take to consume each bite of food, the more time your stomach has to send signals to the brain that you are getting full.

Using smaller plates and bowls will make regular serving sizes appear to be larger. When your mind recognizes the larger looking portions, it will easily be tricked into thinking you are eating more food than is actually on the plate. You will begin to feel full faster, preventing you from overeating. It's also helpful to use plates that are the same color as the tablecloth. This is one trick that many nutritionists claim will help keep the mind from craving certain foods.

Eat according to the rainbow. When you prepare your plate, include small portions of food from as many colors of the rainbow as possible. Apples, carrots, squash, green beans, eggplant and plums are just a few fresh foods that naturally account for various colors of the rainbow. Each color of food offers a specific type of nutrients. While eating the colors of the rainbow offers high levels of nutrition, it can also add calories. When eating according to the rainbow, always remember to use small portions.
