Cravings. We all have them. They’re a natural part of life and honestly, are kind of unavoidable. Oh if only we craved foods that were healthy for us! So how can you satisfy your craving but still stick with the healthy foods in your meal plan? The trick is to switch out your favorite craving snacks with healthy snack alternatives which still taste great.

Potato Chips. These tasty little crisps are a major weakness for many of us; and what’s not to love?! They’re salty, crunchy and satisfying! How can you get that same satisfaction from a healthy alternative? Try munching on 3 cups of air-popped popcorn. This tasty snack has only 110 calories, 1.3 grams of fat and brings the benefit of 4 grams of fiber!

French Fries. Man it seems like the potato is the gift that just keeps giving! French fries are probably the most readily available snack food in America; so much so that they’re often hard to avoid. Many of our clients have switched to snacking on edamame. When sprinkled with sea salt, this healthy alternative to fries packs 8 grams of fiber and 17 grams of protein into a one cup portion.

Candy Bars. We all get a sweet tooth on occasion. The next time yours crops up, opt for a 60% to 70% dark cacao chocolate bar. A standard serving contains antioxidants, 4 grams of fiber and is often far lower in sugar than a Snickers or Hershey’s bar. You’ll get the chocolaty satisfaction you’re craving while not ruining your diet.

Chocolate Chip Cookies. Just like the ones mom used to make! These little tastes of heaven are hard to resist, but one of the best alternatives to these sugary snacks are very satisfying granola bars. While granola bars aren’t always less fattening because of their nut content, they contain more fiber, less sugar, and less saturated fat than a traditional cookie. Many are also packed with healthy dietary fiber.

The key is to stick with your program but still finding ways to reward yourself. Often our cravings are easily satisfied by healthier alternatives which helps keep us honest while giving our tongues what they want.
