Don't Fall for Fad Cleansing
Detox cleansing diets can last anywhere from three days to three weeks. They typically involve drinking only certain types of juices and teas although some cleansing plans do allow you to eat certain foods on certain days. Even so, all cleansing diets have one point in common: they are bad for your long-term health.
Don't Deprive Yourself of Nutrients
Your body needs all the major nutrients in order to function properly. Cleansing diets deprive your system of the carbohydrates and protein needed to keep you healthy, happy and energetic. Lack of proper nutrition can leave you feeling moody, fatigued and vulnerable to sickness. Those who have a sensitive digestive system may experience digestive problems and/or colon problems. Juice cleansing diets are also particularly bad for diabetics, the elderly, people who have heart problems and those who take blood thinning medication.
Regular detox cleansing diets can also slow your metabolism. Your body will hold onto fat to make up for the fact that you aren't consuming carbohydrates; this can make it very difficult to lose weight in the future as any fattening foods you eat will be retained instead of being used for energy.
Let Your Liver and Kidneys Do the Work
The simple fact is that you don't need to go on a cleansing diet to lose weight or even to clean out your system. Your liver and kidneys do a terrific job of eliminating toxins from your system and they don't need help unless you have serious health problems with these organs. If you want to stay healthy and lose weight, then the best approach is to follow a healthy diet on a regular basis. Eating well-rounded meals including healthy starches, low-fat proteins and plenty of fruits and vegetables will enable you to safely shed pounds and keep them off long-term.
