Managing Anxiety with a Lifestyle Change
Five minutes ago, your boss moved up a deadline on a major project. Sitting at your desk, you’re paralyzed with fear. You start imagining all sorts of devastating scenarios in your mind that will result if you’re unable to meet your boss’s demands. If you can relate to this situation, you’re not alone.
According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, approximately 40 million Americans suffer from some type of anxiety disorder. Thankfully, people who battle anxiety can usually be treated successfully. Sometimes, a simple, lifestyle change is all that is required. If you’re dealing with anxiety, consider implementing one or more of the following lifestyle modifications.
Revamp Your Diet
When revamping your diet to manage anxiety, you might want to decrease the amount of soda, tea, and coffee you drink. The caffeine contained in these beverages causes some people to become anxious. Also, strive to eat at least three healthy meals each day. Skipping meals lowers your blood sugar levels. When your blood sugar levels remain compromised for a prolonged period of time, you can become irritable and anxious. Aim to eat foods rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Many of these substances are essential to remaining calm including:
- The B vitamins
- Omega 3 polyunsaturated acids
Begin an Exercise Program
To improve your mood, think about beginning an exercise program. Aim to complete some form of stimulating, physical activity for at least 30 minutes on most days of the week. When you work out, your brain produces mood enhancing chemicals known as endorphins.
Start Sleeping Soundly
A lack of sleep can negatively affect your temperament. To decrease your odds of succumbing to anxiety, strive to get the recommended six to eight hours of sleep each night. If you struggle with insomnia, consider investing in a more supportive pillow, an upgraded mattress, or darker shades for your bedroom.
If left unchecked, anxiety can be crippling. Fortunately, armed with the right tools, many people can overcome this troubling, mental disorder.
