Top 10 Fittest American Cities Announced - Is Yours on the List?
The American College of Sports Medicine recently released its annual America Fitness Index (AFI) report, ranking the 50 most populous metropolitan areas in the United States according to the overall health and fitness of their residents. For the second consecutive year, the nation's capital tops the list.
The report reveals a bit of bad news, including an 11 percent drop in the last year in the number of Americans who exercised in the last 30 days, a 5.5 percent drop in those who eat enough fruit each day and a 7.8 percent increase in diabetes death rates nationwide. Clearly, Americans would do well to adopt the health habits of those in Washington, DC, where73 percent of AFI survey respondents reported regular exercise or physical activity over the prior 30 days, 35.6 percent said they eat two or more fruits each day, 19.6 percent eat three or more vegetables per day and 86.9 percent are non-smokers.
Here are the AFI' top 10 fittest cities:
- Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, DC-VA-MD-WV
- Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington, MN-WI
- San Diego-Carlsbad, CA
- San Francisco-Oakland-Hayward, CA
- Sacramento–Roseville–Arden-Arcade, CA
- Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, CO
- Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro, OR-WA
- Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue, WA
