If you work in a building that has several floors or live in a two-story home, you have a valuable workout tool at your disposal every day. Climbing stairs is an easy and effective way to lose weight. Even if you are not trying to lose weight, stair climbing can help you tone every muscle in your body, even the core muscle groups. You can vary the pace and use the stairs as a vital part of your workout routine, without ever leaving the house. Whether you are going up or down, some portion of your body will be getting a thorough workout.
Because gravity is working against you, you will automatically burn more calories the minute you start climbing the stairs. The faster you go, the more calories you will burn. The amount of weight you carry will also affect the number of calories used. The heavier you are, the more calories you will use. As you lose weight, your body will burn fewer calories as you climb. The best way to keep your calorie usage high is to carry some additional weights. Ankle or wrist weights are ideal because they keep your hands free and you don't have to worry about dropping anything.
You can use a stair machine while you are at the gym, but for the days you stay home use the stairs to add a little spice to your workout. Safety is the key however. so be careful not to go so fast that you trip or fall. Go as fast or slow as you needed so you can maintain your balance and keep moving.
