Fad diets come and go all the time. Liquid, carb-restrictive, low-fat, and single ingredient (think grapefruit) diets have all come and gone over the decades. They may allow some initial weight loss but these diets are unhealthy in the long run as well as unsustainable. Instead, concentrating on a real food diet is the best way to go. These foods naturally balance healthy fats with necessary micro and macronutrients. Additionally, the more you incorporate real foods into your diet, the more you crowd out the less desirable foods.

What is Real Food?

Perhaps celebrity chef Jamie Oliver said it best: "Real food doesn't have ingredients. Real food IS ingredients." Think about the last thing you ate. Did it come from a box? Did it have a nutrition label? Many of these items have ingredients that you cannot pronounce. Instead, incorporate label-less foods into your diet: lean meats, fresh fish, vegetables, and fruits to customize a real food diet to your family's personal tastes.

Why a Real Food Diet Is Successful?

When on a diet, you are trying to burn your body's store of fat. Therefore, a low-fat diet might seem like the best choice. The problem with this approach is that your body actually requires dietary fat to function at its best. The fats available in fresh fish, olive oil, small amounts of unsalted nuts, and pastured meats and eggs work to sustain brain and heart health as well as reduce inflammation throughout the body.

Packaged and processed foods are high in sodium, undesirable fats, and sugar, all of which wreak havoc on your body and make weight loss more difficult. When you create a delicious meal out of fresh, real foods, and fill up on fresh fruits and vegetables, the less likely you are to reach for a bag of processed foods and chemicals.
