How to Avoid Weight Gain During the Holidays
You don't need to starve yourself to lose weight. In fact, starvation diets never work because they cause your body to hoard fat instead of shedding it. Even so, you do need to be mindful of what you eat and how much you eat if you want to lose weight. Discussed below are some tried and proven tips for keeping your weight in check during the holiday season.
Control What You Eat
It's easy to eat without thinking, especially if there are plenty of tasty snacks around or you are engaged talking with someone while you eat. One way to control your eating at a party or holiday meal is to look over the available food options before serving yourself and try to serve yourself healthy (or at least somewhat healthy) foods. If snacks are readily available, take a few and then walk away from the snack table.
Wait Between Helpings
Give yourself time before grabbing seconds. Doing so allows your stomach to signal your mind that it is satisfied and does not need more food.
Watch Out for Sugary Drinks
Alcohol has plenty of calories, so limit your drinking or avoid alcoholic beverages altogether. You will also want to avoid drinking too many soft drinks, as these extremely unhealthy beverages are certain to pack on the pounds.
Plan Your Plate in Advance
If you want to enjoy some fattening goodies at a holiday meal or party, consider exchanging them with other treats you would normally eat. For instance, have a piece of fruit for snack instead of a bag of chips so you don't feel bad eating junk food at the office party.
You don't need to shun your favorite foods to lose weight. Simply plan ahead of time and watch what you are eating and drinking to make sure you don't overdo.
