Buzz Words Don't Make Food Healthy
There are a lot of buzz words flying around when it comes to food these days. In a desperate attempt to screen our bodies from all the chemicals, preservatives, and falseness of the our available food sources, we jump on words that we assume mean safety and health. Sadly it’s usually not that simple. It shouldn’t be this hard to know what is safe to eat and what isn’t, but in this age, and in this country, it just is.
So let’s review a few. How about “Natural.” This is a very broad label according to the FDA. Basically as long as it doesn’t have added color, synthetic ingredients, or artificial flavors, it can be classified as natural. But there are a lot of loopholes companies can find and still use this term.
Then there's “Organic.” Essentially this means that animals are given no antibiotics or growth hormones (that would then transfer to our body once we eat them.) It also means plants that farmers grow didn’t involve pesticides or other harmful chemicals during their production. However, there are actually three levels of organic labeling. Unless the item is marked as 0 Organic, they could be simply p-• percent organic.
Understanding the true meaning behind your food labels, whether it’s Natural, Organic, Fat-Free, Gluten-Free or Vegan, is key towards getting the right stuff in and keeping the wrong stuff out. Especially if it’s a product you buy on a regular basis. What may start as just a little dose of something harmful can - over time - turn into a huge chunk that you have deposited into your body.
