Does Skipping Breakfast Help You Lose Weight?

Do you believe that skipping breakfast will be your secret weapon for losing weight this year?  After all, in order to lose weight, you need to burn more calories than you consume.  So, you may have decided that you will drop breakfast from your daily routine in order to indulge in some calorie dense foods later in the day.  Unfortunately, this theory is fraught with error.  Banishing breakfast in favor of cheesy nachos for lunch might actually cause you to gain weight instead of losing it.

When you skip breakfast, you lack the necessary fuel to start your day with.  Instead of feeling energized, you might end up sluggish, hungry, and irritable.  When you skip meals, your body also tends to go into starvation mode.  It senses a lack of food and doesn’t know when the next meal will come.  When your body enters this phase, it starts to conserve energy by storing fat.  Thus, repeatedly skipping breakfast might actually expand your waistline instead of shrinking it.  Don’t fall into this dieting disaster.  Before heading off to work or school, eat a healthy and hearty breakfast.

To get the most out of this important first meal of the day, stock your pantry with healthy breakfast staples such as oatmeal, whole grain breads, eggs, yogurt, and fruit.  If you lack the time to prepare breakfast in the morning, make something at night.  For instance, you can hard boil a couple of eggs.  Or, you can layer a glass with yogurt, fresh fruit, and nuts.  Once your beautiful concoction is made, refrigerate it.  You can also prepackage servings of homemade granola for each morning of the week.  The possibilities are endlessly delicious.  By choosing real healthy food options in the morning, you can jumpstart your busy day.  And, you won’t be as tempted to scarf down a candy bar or a bag of potato chips before lunch.
