Is Lemon Water A Natural Detox?

Lemons and water are beneficial in many ways. Lemonade on a hot, summer day is refreshing and gives you a much needed energy boost. The drawback with lemonade is the excess amount of sugar that is added. Instead of opting for a tall glass of lemonade, try adding a slice of lemon to a cool glass of water. You won't get the extra sugar, but you will get other benefits that you may not have considered.

Drinking water keeps you hydrated. It also helps to flush toxins from the tissues and carry them away through the urinary tract. When you add a lemon slice to your water, you increase your body's ability to detox. Lemon contains D-limonene which works in the liver to flush away toxins and improve how the organ functions. The combination of both lemon and water acts as a power booster when it comes to cleaning the liver and getting rid of all the contaminants that are filtered out of our blood and the foods we eat.

Lemons also are excellent energy boosters. Lemon essential oils are found within the peel of the fruit. When placed in water, the oils enter the body and act as an energizer boosting the body's metabolism and supporting the immune system. The oils also work throughout the body to freshen and invigorate the skin giving it a healthy, youthful glow.

The next time you are thirsty for a glass of lemonade, opt for the lemon instead. Slice one up and put a couple wedges in your water glass. Not only will have a refreshing beverage, you will be giving your liver a healthy boost as well.
