Is Kefir Milk a Good Probiotic?

Bowl and Spoon with Kefir Grain

Kefir is a grain that is found primarily in Southwest Asia and Eastern Europe. Easily found in many health food stores, kefir grains are commonly added to milk, creating a creamy beverage, or if a heavy cream is used, a product similar in texture to yogurt. Activated kefir grains, when added to milk, offers a nutritionally sound food that is full of essential vitamins and minerals as well as enzymes that are beneficial to digestion. Place a few tablespoons of the grain in milk, covering with a coffee filter or cheese cloth and allow to sit for just over 24 hour to create this tasty treat.

The Benefits of Kefir

Kefir grains have an abundance of nutrients that are easily assimilated by the body. As a probiotic, kefir grains contain at least 30 microorganisms. Most dairy products only contain a minimal number of probiotic enzymes. Kefir grains contain both the enzymes and yeasts that most dairy products lack, making it a powerful probiotic that will not only aid in digestion but also help to boost the immune system. Along with maintaining balance in the intestines, kefir is also thought to fight infections, prevent osteoporosis and reduce the possibility of certain types of cancers.

Incorporating Probiotics Into the Diet

Many people associate probiotics with a healthy gut. While this is true, probiotics as a whole do much towards promoting good health than just maintaining healthy bacterial levels in the digestive system. Incorporating kefir grains into the diet isn't difficult. Whether the grains are mixed with milk and added as a fluid/yogurt textured ingredient or used as a grain, they provide many health benefits. Ideal for soups or textured foods, kefir grains is a nutritionally sound ingredient for many different types of dishes.

My relationship with Metabolic Research center began Feb 2010 when I weighed 182 lbs and had high blood pressure. I lost a total of 69 lbs and 72 inches. It has been 6 years and I continue to maintain my weight. I owe my continued success to MRC and all the great classes, especially yoga and the continued support that I receive from the staff. I have learned that food is nothing but fuel for the body and just as with your car you need to give it the right fuel in order for it to run proper. Follow the program and it is possible to loose the weight and maintain it. Nothing tastes as great as healthy feels!
