Should You Consider Functional Foods to Supplement Your Diet?
Functional foods are foods that have added ingredients not naturally found in the foods in question. These added ingredients are minerals, vitamins and/or other important nutrients that are necessary for healthy bodily function. Examples of healthy fortified foods include iodized salt, milk with added Vitamin D, orange juice with added calcium and flour and bread made with additional B vitamins.
At the same time, it is important to be aware that not fortified foods are good for you. While the above mentioned examples are healthy foods to which additional nutritional value has been added, many supposedly fortified foods are in fact junk foods with a few added nutrients to make them look better than they really are. What is more, many of the nutrients that have been added back to unhealthy foods are not as good for you as the nutrients that were taken from these foods in the first place.
If you want to lose weight, the best way to go about it is to maintain a balanced diet. Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grain foods such as whole wheat bread, brown rice and oatmeal. Keep junk food consumption to a minimum and drink alcohol in moderation as it is known to be quite fattening. At same time, you may need to be realistic and understand that you may not be able to stick to a perfectly healthy diet at all times. Healthy fortified foods can help make up for lacks in your diet and the added nutrients do not add extra calories to the meals you prepare. Just be sure you read the labels on the side to make sure the fortified foods you pick are in fact low in fat and high in nutritional value.
