How You and Your Dog Can Lose Weight Together

Obesity isn't just a problem for people. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention recently noted that over half of all adult dogs in the United States are overweight. Dogs, like people, are susceptible to a host of health problems if they weigh more than they should so helping a pet pooch shed pounds should be a priority for any dog owner. If you are overweight as well, consider the following tips to get in shape together with your dog.

Eat Healthy Foods

Eating less can lead to malnutrition. Dogs (and people) need a healthy diet in order to lose weight. Buy your pet scientifically formulated food specifically designed to promote healthy weight loss. Evaluate your own diet plan and make sure you are eating plenty of healthy foods such as lean meat, whole grains, fruits and vegetables. Cut back on processed foods, sugary foods and drinks and foods with empty calories.

Exercise Regularly

Take your dog for a walk, jog, run or hike on a daily basis. These forms of exercise are safe for any person or animal that is overweight and you will both feel better when you get home.

Have Fun: Involve Other Pet Owners

Being accountable to other people can help you avoid the urge to skip "a day or two" of exercise. Meet with other pet owners at the park to work out together or join a gym that offers workout sessions for both you and your dog. If your dog's stomach is hanging out and you can't easily feel its ribs, then it's time for the dog to lose weight. Those who want to shed pounds along with a pet may want to consider the tips outlined above to get off to a good start. A healthy lifestyle can help you get in shape and avoid unwanted weight gain in the future.
