Time to Commit to a Healthy New Year
Okay, the holiday season is coming to a close, which is often a welcome reprieve after all the cakes, cookies, candy and other treats that are so prevalent this time of year. Now, it's time to get back on track (or newly on track.) and commit to a healthy new year. Easy to say; but I don't know where to start.
That's okay. There is a tendency to over-complicate getting healthy, when it's actually quite simple. You don't need to do anything elaborate. You don't need to purchase expensive equipment, sign up for an expensive gym membership, purchase special clothing or buy overpriced "health" foods or supplements. Isn't that great? All you have to do is make some new choices, each day.
Start with the Fundamentals:
1. Stay Hydrated
See, simple. Drink more water than you think you need. Even minor dehydration can sap energy, slow down digestion and cause changes in mood and focus. Drink more water daily. Drink a full glass of water before a meal and you will eat less. Drink a few glasses of water upon waking in the morning because you are dehydrated when you wake up. These tips can make a huge difference, and it's an easy fix.
2. Eat Raw Foods
No, it's not sushi, although you can eat sushi if you choose. A few times a week, make the majority of your food choices raw, whole foods. Carrot and celery sticks, bananas, oranges, raw spinach leaves, fresh roasted almonds, tomatoes, etc. Fill up on these and avoid anything processed.
3. Get Enough Sleep and Exercise
A 30-minute walk a day is a great start, and any other exercise you can squeeze in. Be sure to get at least 7 hours of sleep per night. Being tired is a huge trigger for overeating or eating too much sugar.
4. Don't Go It Alone
Find someone who also has weight loss or fitness goals. Walk or run with them, go out for healthy lunches with them. Call them when you are feeling discouraged.
