Who We Are

At Metabolic Research Center, our goal to know each client on an individual level is based on decades of scientific research in the fields of medicine and nutrition. Although we always strive to provide excellent customer service, our interest is health motivated and not based on the delivery of concierge weight management services. Early research into the weight loss dilemma by renowned Harvard professor, Dr. George Blackburn, proved that the body is very good at supervising fat storage, but cannot tell the difference between dieting and starvation. So, years before the onset of today's popular "Fad Diets", medical science was discovering that the body has more than one way to defend its stored fat, and that long-term caloric deprivation is a natural signal for the body to turn down its metabolic rate.

Metabolic Research Center

Weight management research by our doctors and registered dieticians at MRC has verified that the body reacts negatively to stringent dieting, as though a famine has set in. This explains why many dedicated dieters, who experience relatively quick weight loss, become stuck and then lose weight at a very slow rate while experiencing strong food cravings and constant feelings of hunger. As generations of dieters have now learned, the human body's innate biological response can cause dieting to become progressively less effective and the prospect of additional weight loss starts to appear somewhat impossible. At Metabolic, we have developed a proven approach to weight loss that takes advantage of your conscious mind to enhance your opportunity to lose weight and keep it off.

Education

Since the body's internal controls are set differently in different people, our weight loss plans also take into account the genetic nature of your ideal body weight rather than use it as an excuse for being overweight. So, even if you have not had the success you were looking for with other weight loss programs, it doesn't matter. At any Metabolic Center, you can learn how to lose unwanted pounds, improve your overall outlook on life and avoid many of the health issues associated with being overweight. Our experienced staff understand how immensely frustrating failed attempts at losing weight can be and that's why we're always there for you every step of the way. We can help you establish realistic goals, learn how to eat the right foods, get you started on a mild exercise regimen and help you shed weight without experiencing constant food cravings.

Nutrition

According to Dr. Blackburn, a realistic approach to weight loss and nutrition begins where overeating and health problems meet. Clearly, it is important to understand where your hunger comes from and how to satisfy it with the right intake of healthy foods. That's why we always encourage eating fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, a modest amount of lean meats, fish and poultry, as well as low-fat dairy products. These are foods you can purchase from your local grocery store that do not contain added sugar or fat. We will also teach you that the first step to effective weight loss is to stop unwanted weight gain by not overeating. You will find it is much easier to lose weight by avoiding stressful eating situations and by chewing your food a bit more slowly. In general, it takes about twenty minutes for the first bite of food consumed to signal the brain that your hunger has been satisfied. To help you stay on track, our trained specialists will teach you how to deal with the "stress and fatigue" that were major contributors to your unwanted weight gain.

Motivation

We simply don't believe in the approach that there is a "one size fits all" solution to weight management, so your Metabolic program is personalized. We understand that an individual is at his or her best fitness and hunger control when they are at their ideal weight and not someone else's. Since food cravings can be a real problem to keeping weight off, we provide therapeutic solutions to help you deal with any road blocks. By taking advantage of a proven scientific approach to monitoring your weight, our team can help you achieve your ideal weight while ensuring that you are happy, eating the right amount of good food, avoiding unnecessary hunger pains, getting the sleep and rest your body needs, and effectively managing stress in your life. Designing a personalized Metabolic weight loss plan is our secret ingredient to help you accomplish your weight loss goal and keep that weight off for life.

About Dr. George Blackburn

George Blackburn, M.D., Ph.D., serves as Associate Professor of Surgery and Nutrition, Associate Director of the Division of Nutrition, and is the first incumbent of the S. Daniel Abraham chair in Nutrition Medicine at Harvard Medical School. As a physician, he was one of the first American doctors to apply "the science of medicine" with "the science of nutrition". Three decades ago his studies at MIT's Department of Nutrition and Food Science laid the scientific groundwork for many M.D.s and Ph.D.s to better understand the mechanics of "how to lose weight" and "how to keep weight off". Dr. Blackburn is also the, Chief of the Nutritional/Metabolism Laboratory, and Director of the Center for the Study of Nutrition Medicine, which are affiliated with the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts. He has published many papers and written books on the medical science behind nutritional weight loss.

As a physician, I see the impact of excess weight on a person's life and health. After 34 years in practice, I know that weight loss is about much more than simply changing eating habits. Metabolic Research Center provides the nutritional advice, expertly designed weight-loss menus, one-on-one support, motivation and the education a client needs to be successful. I know firsthand the consultants at the centers are knowledgeable, supportive and encouraging. The program helped me lose weight, regain control of my eating habits and feel good again. That's why I accepted the position as MRC Medical Director 25 years ago, because I believed in the program and knew that it was safe and medically sound.

Serving as a pediatrician for the past 27 years, I know the importance of a nutritionally sound diet for everyone's health, well being and longevity. I became an advisor to Metabolic Research Center's MetaKidz program, because I have watched in amazement as the obesity epidemic overtook the U.S. population. In opposition to this climb, the MetaKidz program works to achieve the goals and lifestyle changes needed for optimal health. I know the commitment that MRC takes to keep up with the most current health and nutrition research for children and adults. With the guidance of your child's pediatrician and this weight-loss program, you and your children can enjoy many years of healthy, productive time together.
